High Performance Bus Powered Storage for Video and Photo Capture.
If a person were to daydream about the perfect storage solution for on location video and photo capture it might go something like this... A large capacity would be a requirement, enough room for plenty of P2 and CF cards. How about being bus powered so it doesn't have to be plugged into the power grid. Makes it much more portable and convenient. What about speed, maybe enough to actually edit uncompressed HD video or run a photo database without slowing the computer down. The capability to automatically configure a duplicate of the storage data would beneficial for some folks. Well, these pipe dreams are now available in the new Sonnet Fusion F2 drives. These tiny enclosures fit a pair of 500GB 2.5" Laptop drives into a compact enclosure that offers each drive it's own bandwidth for optimum performance. For power it uses a Firewire cable attached to the computer or a powered hub leaving the Firewire bus bandwidth untouched for other devices. The drives themselves attach via a pair of eSATA cables for data transfer. The pair of drives can be configured as a software RAID 0 for performance or a RAID 1 Mirror for a duplicate of the data on both drives. Pretty cool! Let the dreams begin!
Fusion Enclosures are available with either 5400 or 7200 RPM drives installed. When configured as a RAID 0 for performance the 5400 RPM drives are capable of 150 MB/s and the 7200 RPM drives an astounding 190 MB/s. The performance is dependent on the host card being capable of this speed. Consequently we recommend the Sonnet Express-34 PRO Card for it's impressive performance characteristics. The Marvel chipset on this card offers enhanced performance over that of the Silicon Image 3132 based cards.
The Fusion F2's chassis is all aluminum to offer the drives some cooling without fans for a quiet workplace. For a longer work day the Fusion can be powered from an external battery pack such as the Tekkeon MP3450i for up to 9 hours of work without draining your computer.
The drives may be configured in a RAID-1 (mirror) which will offer redundant data while still capable of capturing Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) HD fed from an AJA ioHD. This protected mode also enables you to safely transfer data from Panasonic P2, Sony SxS Pro, or similar memory cards in the field. Verifying captured footage on a MacBook Pro/Fusion F2 system will provide you the peace of mind to erase and reuse cards on location.
Fusion storage systems support Mac OS X, Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional, and Linux. Compatible with capture cards from AJA, Blackmagic Design, Matrox, and Bluefish444, and works with all mainstream video editing applications including Apple Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Premiere Pro.
