Lots of choices for Mac and PC users with anything from 4 port internal or external cards to 4 port monsters supporting huge capacities with Port Multiplier Technology and tremendous 600 plus MB/sec sustained speeds when formatted into RAID arrays.
The last couple of years we have seen several host cards come out supporting Port Multiplication for up to 20 mounted drives as well as individually connected drives. This is the versatility, capacity and performance king of storage and has dominated our entire lineup all year. It is well worth your effort to see the capabilities of the new technologies represented by the host bus adapters like the CalDigit, Lycom and the 4 port Sonnet X4P. The Lycom cards are typically PC cards with Mac firmware available for download. Superior performance at a low low cost.
Hardware based RAID Controllers with an on-board CPU and RAM to manage RAID functions without taxing your computers resources are very popular. These controllers can support up to 16 SATA drives in a RAID 5 configuration for excellent performance and data safety. They have built in notification software that will notify you via email if the array experiences a problem.
Note: The PCI-X cards using Silicon image chipsets such as the CalDigit Fasta-4x and the Lycom LYCeSATA-4x will not work in PCI equipped Mac G5 computers. To verify if you have a PCI or PCI-X version Dual Processor G5 go to "System Profiler"/ Hardware/ Memory. Count your available RAM slots, you will either have 4 or 8 and will start out with DIMM0. If you have four your machine is PCI and you must use the Sonnet X4P card. If you have 8 slots you may use any card.
