The G-Force Protection feature provides enhanced data protection against shock that may occur while the drive is operating. This feature is only available on the 7200 RPM Momentus SATA drive ending with "ASG", in 250, 320 or 500 GB Sizes This feature may protect your data should the drive be dropped while it's operating.
Hard drives use revolving platters and a moving read/write head that's only 25 - 38 angstroms away. That's roughly 1/10,000 the thickness of a human hair. Because the heads are flying over the media when the drive is in an active state, a large mechanical shock to the drive could cause the heads to touch the media, causing damage to the disk and potential data loss. In the hard drive industry, we call this type of event a head slap. Seagate's G-Force drives are designed so the drive can withstand a mechanical shock of up to 300 Gs preventing the damaging head slap. These drives also employ a freefall sensor that will detect if the drive is dropped and quickly park the drive head to protect the platters from damage. We highly recommend the G-Force drives for any mobile device that may encounter a violent shock.
The 7200 RPM model drives offer added performance but at the price of slightly higher battery drain. These faster drives are especially useful as a High Performance internal Boot Drive or in a Firewire 800 drive enclosure. If you must have the longest possible battery life for working on extended flights or where external power may not be available stick with the 5400 RPM version drives.
