        Burly Low Noise Thunderbolt Enclosures - a Quiet - high performance storage solution

   We have been following the devlopement of Thunderbolt for a couple of years now starting with Light Peak. A combination of Apples’ Display Port and the PCI Express bus, Thunderbolt adds significant throughput capability to some Apple machines. The iMac and MacBook Pro specifically benefit from the upgrade in I⁄O capability over Firewire 800 or the Express34 slot.

Thunderbolt is still in it’s infancy with many changes and improvements yet to come. The initial release uses a copper conductor cable which will be replaced with fiber optic cabling and finally a hybrid cable that used fiber optics for data transfer and copper conductors to power small devices.

  The Thunderbolt port is now available on many new Apple computers, however the chipsets and bridges needed to produce Thunderbolt equipped peripherials and drive enclosures are not yet available. We don’t expect to start seeing the components needed by the manufacturers to create these devices until late 2011 or first quarter 2012. From all indications it seems that the industry is going to exploit the high performance nature of Thunderbolt and create high performance and consequently high cost enclosures using the Thunderbolt connection. The Burly Low Noise Thunderbolt Enclosures will be one exception.
